The story behind this yarn

ALPACA - WOOL

Silky soft Dutch alpaca with robust Dutch sheep's wool.

The origin of Heem lies in the wool from local sheep farms. The white, grey, and deep dark brown sheep's wool is sorted by color and blended with the natural colors of Dutch alpaca fleeces.

Together with six hand-spinners from the spinning group Wereldwied in Zeeland, I blended, spun, and tested various ratios of sheep's wool and alpaca wool. Searching for a combination where the softness and luster of alpaca work together with the resilience and volume of sheep's wool. We chose 50% of each.

Using the natural fleece colors, we developed a unique blend recipe of wool and alpaca for each color nuance.

Heem is spun nearby, just across the border, in a small-scale spinning mill. There, it is possible to precisely weigh and blend the different fleece colors for every shade.

The result is a soft, voluminous, and resilient yarn with a naturally undyed color palette.

Care and washing instructions

Washing and care
Wash as little as possible. Wool does not need to be washed after every wear. A night outside or near an open window often does wonders. Got a spot? Dab it with lukewarm water and a drop of wool detergent. Let it dry and you're done.

Washing can be done by hand or in the washing machine.
Hand wash:
• Washing: Use lukewarm water (maximum 30 °C) and a small amount of wool detergent.
• Soaking: Let the garment soak for about 20 minutes. Rinsing is not necessary.
• Removing excess water: Gently squeeze the water out (absolutely do not wring). Lay the garment on a towel and roll the towel up. Apply pressure to the roll to press the water out of the knit — do not wring or twist!
Washing in the washing machine:
• Preparation: Ensure the soap dispenser and the drum are free of soap residue.
• Washing: Select the wool cycle at a maximum of 30 °C. Use a small amount of wool detergent.
• Spin cycle: Maximum 800 rpm.
• Remove the knit from the machine immediately.

Drying: flat. Always.
Lay the knit flat to shape and let it dry that way.
Never hang it. Not on a hanger, not on a line. Not in the sun, not on the radiator, and not in the tumble dryer.

Need a refresh?
Want to freshen up the knit or bring it back into shape? Steam it carefully. Hold the iron just above the knit, without touching the fabric.

Pilling
Wool can form small balls on the surface of a knit due to friction. That is part of wearing woolen clothing. Remove the balls carefully with a wool comb or fabric shaver.
I consciously choose not to use an anti-pilling treatment because I want to maintain the natural properties and appearance of the wool.

Before knitting
Wash and block your swatch exactly the way you will wash the garment later. Measure your swatch before and after washing so you know how much to account for when determining the size.
